WUNDER
WUNDER / MIRACLE
Illumination Kloster Einsiedeln 2025
In January 2025, the monastery square in Einsiedeln was filled with light and life. It was the first high-class light event using mapping technology with moving images and captivating music on the exterior façade of the Einsiedeln Monastery.
Tim Schmelzer was invited to the monastery by the monks in advance to get to know the largest place of pilgrimage in Switzerland and the way of life of the Benedictine monks. Tim accompanied them in their prayers and daily routines. This experience influenced the artistic direction of the projection staging. The title ‘Miracle’ for this work was characterised by the impressions of monastery life, the chants and prayers of the monks and the pilgrimage site with the Black Madonna.
The world premiere of the first ‘Illumination Kloster Einsiedeln’ immersed visitors in six miracles and took them on a spiritual journey into the light. A miracle is inexplicable, supernatural and can be a source of hope, especially in today's world.
The miracle of creation, faith and life was presented in several chapters through this light and sound experience. It included sound recordings of the chants of the Benedictine monks of Einsiedeln and organ music by Father Teo Flury from the monastery church.
A special chapter was dedicated to the statue of the Black Madonna in the monastery church. People come to a place of pilgrimage like Einsiedeln with their sorrows and grief, their pleas and thanks, and their joy. For the many pilgrims, the Black Madonna symbolises care and closeness. She encourages people to have hope and to keep an open heart for others.
